BACK HOME AGAIN IN INDIANA!

The title of today's blog is also a song that is sung each year at the Indianapolis 500.  It us usually sung by Indiana natives, Florence Henderson, Jim Neighbors and others.

I was happy to be back home with my girls and grands.  I started to choke up about four blocks from Holly's home. John could not drive the motorhome fast enough through the busy Indianapolis streets to suit me.

My plan was to surprise Holly, Lucy and Ross.  The house was dark. The surprise was on me.  The kiddo's gymnastic classes are now on Wednesday nights instead of last year's Monday nights.

The "surprises" for our firstborn, Karen on Thursday since it was her birthday.  Now, that surprise did work out.  She was totally surprised and her mom had wet cheeks, once again.  A year is a long time not to see one's children.  I have no idea how we ever went so long without seeing Jojo.

Karen is assistant director of an inner city center for the homeless and anyone who needs emotional, spiritual, economic help for their families.

For the children in the area Karen is using her artistic abilities to run a very successful program called Art in the City.  She teaches the students all forms of art.  Many of her lessons are based on the works of famous artists.   The photos speak for themselves.

An example of Karen's talent.
The rest you will see is the student's art works in various stages of completion.

MONSTERS!

Students learn that they can create art from anything, even cardboard!

This is a project, again based on a famous artist's work. It was made from recycled plastic bottles that were, cut in spirals, painted then  hot glued together

When our visit was over, we went into Indianapolis and Stout's shoe store to try to find hiking shoes for this winter. Stouts is touted to be the oldest shoe store in the United States. Stouts opened their doors in 1886 and survived two world wars and the Great Depression. I remember shopping there with my grandmother as well as my parents.

When I visited I would always visit with the store mascot, a Parrot.  Today, Ripley, a Macaw is the star of the show.

When a pair of shoes is selected, the salesperson loads the box with the shoes into a basket and sends it to the balcony where the cashier finalizes the sale, wraps the box in brown paper, like a gift and sends the purchase zipping from the balcony back down to the sales person.
Next on our route was to finally see Holly, Lucy and Ross.  It was a very quick visit as they were on their way to get hair cuts.

Last on our list was to stop at our granddaughter's home to see Megan and Harper.  Adam was at work, so we missed him.

When we left for the southwest in December, Harper was an almost two year old that chose not to talk.  Let me tell you, this little one has found her voice and uses it every minute she is awake.  And not one word at a time either.  She carries on in full sentences.

What a fun day Thursday was!  Wow, we were tired puppies Thursday evening.

Friday started another whirl wind day.  We drove to Indiana's first capitol, Corydon, in southern Indiana, not far from the Ohio River.  We wanted to visit with our fiber friends who were at the Southern Indiana Fiber Festival, and felt we catch up with many friends in one day trip.

It was wonderful seeing so many of our friends and to hear them tell John how great he looks.  I am sure that John was greatly encouraged by all the comments.

Of course, I could not leave empty handed.  I am now the proud owner of a Tapestry Loom.  The history of this loom goes back to ancient Egypt and to the Native Americans right here in the desert southwest.   It is a smaller loom.  I will be able to weave tapestries up to two feet long.

Yesterday, Saturday, was shopping day.  There is an International Market nearby and we were able to stock up on many Thai, Mexican, Chinese, fruits and vegetables that we have not had access to since we left California.

Afterwards, we finished our shopping at Wally World and found that items that we did not purchase due to the "high" prices were lower than Wal Mart's.  Lesson learned for the time we are here.

Today, we go to Megan and Adam's to play with Harper and to watch the Colts / Denver Bronco's game.  Peyton Manning was a joy to have as quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and we were so sorry to see him go.  Tonight we will be rooting for the Colts and Peyton. We just do not want the Broncos to win.

Till next time....God Bless you all and be safe in your travels.

ENJOYING THE JOURNEY?

Earlier, when we would begin our trips, I could hardly wait to arrive at our destination - so we could enjoy our vacation.  We would drive "straight through" for sixteen or twenty hours - in order to be there sooner and start our vacation.  We would arrive totally exhausted, but we were there, it was time to enjoy!  (After we rested for a day.)

Then I learned that the journey was part of the vacation and that I needed to be thankful, slow down and appreciate the drive.

Why am I talking about this now?  Because I have learned another lesson in "enjoying the trip,"  the journey.

John and I have talked about selling the house and full timing for over a year.  It was a dream in the distant future, something to chat about, to read information and blogs, to investigate.

As the last eighteen months have progressed, the talks were more frequent. We talked about traveling to the art and fiber shows as part of our full timing.  We would just make our journey fit the show schedule.

Selling our house became part of those wishful discussions.  We sure didn't want to full time and have a house back in Indiana.  So we interviewed Realtors and set the plan in motion.

We decided, before listing the house, we wanted to do some work to increase the value and decrease the waiting time for the sale.  The cherry hardwood floors were already down.  That was one thing we had in our plan book from the day we moved in fourteen years ago.

We made a list of all the other things we wanted to do prior to the day of listing. We also set a goal, an unrealistic goal of January first. Now keep in mind that this goal was set the second  week of November.

Today is January eighth and we are still working!  Gee, what a surprise.  Our second goal of January fifteenth is fast approaching. We will not meet that goal either.

Let me digress about ten days.  John's health is not the best.  He has emphysema.  He is on three inhalers and oral medications.  He has to stop and catch his breath often.  To add to that, he has always been a slow worker / mover.  It is just his nature.  I have tried to challenge him to walk faster, work faster, think faster, drive faster.  But that just isn't John.  Finally, I have accepted it and am thankful for what he does in his own speed.

With his emphysema and my arthritis, setting up our sales booth has become a greater challenge at every show. We drive to the city where the show is located, unload, set up the booth, greet customers for two or three days.  But we are exhausted.

When the show is over we are back to packing up, transporting merchandise back to the motorhome and reloading the basement with the shelves, displays and merchandise. All the time, I'm grouchy because I hurt all over and John is just trying to breathe.  Now does any of this make sense to you?  Not me, not John.  I have had two huge meltdowns in the last few days.  How ridiculous.

We have decided that we do not NEED this extra work.  The money is not worth it.  The work is hard on us physically and hurts our relationship.  You just can't put a dollar amount on health and relationships.

I will continue my art work. I love my art work.  It is part of me.   I will sell on line ..... if and when I choose!  I do need to work on an excellent website and establish an Etsy and Ebay outlet for my work.

Okay, back to the subject of enjoying the journey.  Now that we have decided to withdraw from the shows, we do not have to be in Tennessee mid March!  That means we do not have to "break our necks" to get the house ready to sell so fast in order to get out to southern California and back to Tennessee!  Whew, what a relief.

Yesterday, we both worked outdoors. John installed new outdoor lighting.  I mowed part of the pasture that needed some TLC.  While mowing, it was so nice to look over the ground, at the trees, to watch the wild life even if it was voles and rabbits running from the tractor.  I began to enjoy the journey to full timing.

We burned downed trees, branches, brush.  I cleaned the chicken pen and around one of the barns.  I enjoyed the journey a bit more.

Today, is a day of rest for us.  We will enjoy this journey too.  We are going to the motorhome to watch the New York Giants play Atlanta in their wild card game.  We must support at least one Manning since our poor Colts did so miserably this season.

I have two more beams and the fireplace brick in the family room to paint.  John has four columns to finish and to put baseboard down where we installed the new hardwood floors. (kitchen, front, family, dining rooms and the entry.)  Now THAT was a journey!  Oh yes, I must paint the columns and baseboard.  Oops, there are windows to wash and cabinets and wood trim to polish.  Oh oh, there is one closet left to empty.  And my studio!  Eeeek! We both know that there will be more tasks to raise their ugly heads, don't we.

Tomorrow, we continue the journey to clean the barns.  Can anyone say dumpster?  We continue to work outside as the weather allows.  I am amazed that we are outdoors working in January.  I am thankful for the Journey.

One thing we have continually asked ourselves during this journey is why didn't we do these tasks earlier for ourselves?  Why didn't we get the new appliances so we could enjoy them?  Why didn't we do .........Why?

Maybe the reason is to teach us to enjoy the journey.  Every journey that God blesses us with.

LOVELY LORD'S DAY!

Welcome to my world to Judy and Emma.  I sure hope you two get out of the parking lot soon.  I love your patience and positive attitude!  Also Kenny and Angela have come aboard.... welcome to you too - even though you are from Kansas City!  hehehe

What a beautiful fall day we have been blessed with.  The sun has been out most of the day.  The temperature has been huddling around seventy five degrees.  Walnuts are falling with loud thuds blessing me with a vast amount of dyeing materials.

When dyeing, walnuts provide the most beautiful shades of brown.  I will collect them and place in a wheel barrow and then let it fill with rain over the winter.  Then I will bring the brown rainwater into the studio and dye.

Walnuts and Marigolds are my two favorite dyes found in my yard.  I have tried others, such as Queen Ann's Lace, but quickly learned that is one dye that I don't want to use in the studio since the odor is like a nap in a field in the plant.  It is a very pungent odor.... not pleasant.  The color though is a soft gold.  I like it.

There are many other natural dyes and eventually, I will try them.  My schedule, thus far, has hampered me from taking the time to experiment.

Gluten free living is going quite nicely.  John went to the store and found many gluten free products.  The one that I have tried and will give a five star rating is a product from Enjoy Life Natural Brands, LLC, a nut and gluten free bakery in Shiller Park, Illinois.  Yea... not China.  Have I told you I don't like products from China?  OK, the name of the product is their soft baked snickerdoodles!  Oh my!  mighty good.

The exercise portion of my take charge life is moving right along.  We are walking almost two miles.  This is a MAJOR accomplishment for John with his emphysema.  He must stop occasionally to breathe (kinda important), but he keeps pushing.

I was surprised how badly I am out of shape too.  Sitting with this osteoarthritis is not the answer.  I could not believe that two miles was all I want to do at this point.  Me, an ex runner..... two miles... sad.  And the time it took us to walk that far....   on my goodness.
We will do better a month from now, I am sure.

Observations:  the last tree to leaf out on our little farm was the Sycamore.  It is also the first tree to loose it's leaves.  It is in its full splendor only four months of the year and has no beautiful fall colors.  The first tree to gain it's leaves, is I believe the Bradford Pear and it is one of the very last to shed all it's leaves and provides colors starting with gold and ages to red, maroons and purples.

The Colts lost again today.  They are STILL my team of choice.  It is a shame that with the Super Bowl here this season, that the Colts will not be playing.

My hand surgery is Tuesday.  I am so ready.  I am looking forward to having two working hands.  There is only one problem.  I don't know if I will be able to post for a while.  I will try to find a way. I am right handed and have been practicing doing my right handed activities with my left hand.  Some are easy and some are not.  Oh well, this too will pass.

Stay safe out there.

God bless your walk today....
