GROUNDED FOR EIGHT TO TEN WEEKS!



Yesterday, I was dressed and ready to head out the door for my walk. My goal for the day was another seven to ten mile walk.

As I stood, I felt like someone had shot me from the groin down to the knee. To walk, I had to hold on to counters, tables, etc. All I could think of was the hip had given out and I was going to need the hip replacement that is know is down the road...somewhere off in the distant future, I've been hoping.

I called my Dr. DiLella at Ortho Indy.  He was in surgery yesterday, but I was able to secure an appointment for ten this morning.

The diagnosis?  ........ over training! He is recommending cross training instead of a single diet of walking.  I am to swim and ride a bicycle. Oh, great.....we just don't happen to have a pool in our motorhome. And I need to purchase a bicycle.  AND I love, love, love walking!  




Kayaking -                                                                                                                John and I have been looking into purchasing kayaks.  Now a kayak and a bicycle?  Good grief, what is next?   








On a happier note, Monday morning, the Miata went into the shop to be repaired and we should have it by the end of the week.  

Our final appointment is next week.  We are to have the follow up from our cataract surgery tune up. After those two appointments, we are good to go.  And I mean GO......as in on down the road!  

Today, I am making socks on my Circular Sock Machine.  It is not walking, but I have something to do as we wind up the next week and a half.

Here is a great recipe!  What I like about it is that you don't have to bake it.  BUT, I like my carrots soft, so I am going to cook the carrots and apple a bit.  That sure beats heating up the motorhome with the oven.

Raw Vegan Carrot Cake

Yield: 8 servings 

For the carrot cake:
- 2 cups carrot pulp (see note below for instructions on using whole carrots)
- 1/2 cup pecans, soaked 6+ hours, drained & rinsed
- 1 cup Medjool dates, pitted
- 1/2 cup shredded coconut
- 1 Fuji apple, cored and cut into medium size pieces
- 1 quarter size chunk of ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon


For the frosting:

- 1 1/4 cup cashews, soaked 6+ hours, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla powder (I used extract)
- 1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 3 Medjool dates, pitted
- 1/3 cup water, more or less for desired consistency

1. For the frosting: In a high-speed blender blend all the above frosting ingredients, minus the water. Add the water in slowly using just enough to blend making it creamy. Pour into a small bowl and set aside.

2. For the cake: Place the chunks of apple into the food processor. Blend until it becomes coarsely shredded. Be careful not to over process. It should be coarse pieces. Then add the carrot pulp along with all the rest of the ingredients above for the cake mix. Pulse until it becomes a coarse sticky mix. Once again, make sure to not over process. (I placed carrot pulp and apple chunks in microwave for 2 minutes to cook a bit -just to tenderize them)

NOTE: If using whole carrots cut them into medium size chunks and add them with the apple to blend, making coarse pieces.

Line an 8x8 glass baking dish with wax paper. Press the mix evenly into the dish, then add the frosting generously on top. Place in freezer for about one hour. Take out of the fridge and let it sit for about 25 minutes before eating. Sprinkle cinnamon on top and voila'!

  1. I am not surprised the doctor suggested cross training. I know several people that ha an issue like you. One person purchased a small stationary bike that she carries with her in the motor home. She found it on eBay. Very small and compact. Just a thought.

    Show us your socks when you get them done. That looks like a cool machine.

    1. LOL....I ripped the sock out. Was not pleased with what it was doing. And guess what I found......Little bits of dust and sand from the desert. It is going to get a good cleaning! Then, I will have nice socks.

  2. Oh dear, Nan! sounds awful! Overtraining happens to us sometimes. For me, it was too much physical stuff in soil survey, but I still have my knees and hips for the moment at least. Take care of yourself.

  4. You scared me to death with your title.

    I am surprised that you need cross training because of walking 7 to 10 miles. I do it all the time I just call it hiking. Do you do it every day? The key to it IMO is you must have specific shoes for that purpose and they have to come from a running store. I spend $120 on a pair of shoes and replace them about every 15 months. They make all the difference in what is happening. If I have hip pain, shin pain, ankle pain or any foot pain it is because my shoes are past due. If you have a good running shop go over and tell them your symptoms and see what they say about your shoes.

    We do carry both kayaks and bikes but it sure makes poor Ruby a work horse andfull of all t he gear that goes with these toys. No room ever for anyone to ride in the backseat. Depending on where you are traveling there are unfortunately only a few places you can use either one of them unless you are willing to bike on regular roads.

    Are these knitted socks? I adore hand knitted socks but just cannot keep my stitches even enough to make them. Do you make socks for yourselves on it?

    1. Sorry I scared you. I have gone from one to two miles to 7 to 10 miles since the first of June. I think too much too fast. I have new walking shoes that were professionally fitted at the tune of $160.00.

      You have made me reconsider the bike idea. Very good thoughts coming from your experience.

      Yes, these are knitted socks. I hand knit them in addition tousing my Circular Sock Knitting Machine.

  5. Glad you found that the need for cross training was your problem. Don't let it discourage you from exercising. Though in my situation, it won't help, the aquatic therapy is wonderful to keep other joints in order without the pain of over exercising. Isn't there.

    I had never heard of silver sneakers until I went for aquatic therapy: http://tinyurl.com/p7esdns Maybe you are covered (I wasn't). Between it and YMCAs, gold gyms, curves--you might be able to travel and still keep up with your exercise program. Keep moving, Nan. I sure wish I could.

  8. Over training! You certainly have had problems sent your way. Do you feel like a Job at times with these problems? I know you'll figure this out and find something that works perfectly.

    1. I am afraid that this problem was not sent, but self inflicted. I started walking late May - early June and was up to almost 10 miles by mid July. Too much, to fast! We make choices and pay the piper if it is a bad choice.

      I did visit with my physical therapist that worked with me when I had knee replacements and with John when he got out of the hospital. He had super suggestions. At least I like them better than my ortho Dr. Instead of no walking for 8 to 10 weeks, PT says no walking for two weeks. Then, try one mile, if comfortable walking the one mile for a week, then increase to two miles for two weeks, etc, etc. All this coupled with the cross training.

  9. Somehow I'm not surprised that you have over done it. Just the way you are - gung ho about life. Sure hope you feel better. Getting back on the road might make it a little easier to slow down on the walking. At least you'll be moving.

  11. Maybe instead of boondocking all of the time you should look for Rv parks that have heated pools. The $ spent on space rent would be well worth it if it helped you recover. My only problem with the YMCAs I have tried is the pools areoo cold for real therapy. Great for young lap swimmers, but not for older who need the warmer water. I have also seen many who wear a wet suit to keep them warm. Water exercise is great non weight bearing exercise if done right. You won't loose weight, but you will continue to keep range of motion while you heal.

    1. Merikay, it is really funny. We have not boondocked since we saw you in Borrego Springs early May. How is that for a surprise! I don't see much boondocking in our future until we return to the southwest.

  12. Like Sherry, I was freaked out! Still sorry you're in pain, but I actually laughed and thought "Oh good!" Why can it never be "don't wash and wax the rig anymore" instead of giving up something you love for weeks??? Glad everything else is on track for your get-away - I know you can't wait to head West. Hopefully the fires will be contained and you can enjoy a leisurely pace.
